19-year-old Sean Altimas from West Belfast successfully completed Springboard’s JobWorks SIA License programme earlier this summer.
Sean applied for JobWorks after he found his old job wasn’t for him and he wanted a new start.
“I knew JobWorks could open up more opportunities for me.”
Sean’s favourite part of the programme was the people he met inside and outside of the Springboard offices. This included Rodney from programme partner EventSec, who taught Sean’s group a variety of professional security & stewarding skills and techniques. He also enjoyed the chance to take part in First Aid training, which allowed him to gain a recognised qualification in emergency First Aid – something which is widely valued by employers and has boosted his employability.
But it wasn’t just about the training! The programme allowed Sean to form valuable friendships with other participants from different communities in Belfast, which added to the enjoyment of his JobWorks experience!
Sean credits his JobWorks mentors Laura and Conor with helping him to develop his job-search and interview skills – an area he once lacked confidence in – by offering guidance and support in everything from body posture in formal interviews to using the right language on job applications. This boosted his confidence as he gained more experience in applying for jobs, ultimately finding one he enjoys.
Sean now works as a bartender/runner in the newly-established The Tipsy Bird, a popular cocktail bar in the centre of Belfast.
“I like working under pressure, so I really like the fast-pace of working in a busy bar.”
He says he also enjoys the “good craic” had in work alongside his co-workers, who come from a number of areas across not just Northern Ireland but the wider UK.
As for the future, Sean hopes to make use of his SIA License, as well as the wider skills and experience he gained during JobWorks to find a long-term job he’s happy and comfortable in.
His advice for other young people like him thinking about signing up to the next JobWorks programme is simple – do it!
“You’re welcomed as soon as you come through the front door at Springboard. Everyone here is brilliant and they always want to help you out. It’s like another home – that’s the only way I can describe it.”
